xfs: Cannot establish any listening sockets

Hi, 

System ran perfectly. Xfs started ok. 

Ran out of space on /. Copied /usr to /drv2/usr (cp -rp). Renamed /usr /oldusr. 
Created symbolic link /usr to /drv2/usr. Now have 1.4gb spare. 

Everything else seems to boot ok but the X Font Server fails to start - syslog 
reports: Cannot establish any listening sockets. 

The usual reason seems to be another instance running. Not so in this case. 
SAMBA works so presumably it can establish listening sockets. 

Any clues?
