you could use debian stable like me, then you only upgrade the OS
every 3 years or so, then grub can pretty much be installed once and
forgotten about for at least that long (you don't even strictly have
to upgrade grub on disk when the package or OS is upgraded either).

heh now that I have probably offended just about everyone ill shut up
now ;-p
