unless your kernel is weird your process can allocate nearly 3GB of
RAM w/o problems --- which should be plenty

probably not, but it would require some hacking and i'm not sure it's
worth it

i'm a bit lost, if you have plenty of memory free why you are getting
out of memory with such a small filesystem

when you get the out of memory error, where does it come from and what
does it say?  also, how much memory is it xfs_check using?
