no idea what maildiraclttest does, nor can make sense of strace output, 
I was hoping you could help us out here...

What does "maildiraclttest" do?  strace of the above?

OK, will need more details than that though... what library?
which calls?  which files?  how are they written?  etc.

Sounds unrelated, I'd guess (by the name of that program) this
has something to do with permissions/ACLs.
