XFS does much more internal checking then other filesystems.

xfs_fsr runs on mounted filesystems, but its rarly necessary.

as for checking, windows can't check a filesystem which is in use
either, it tells you it will just mark it to be checked on next reboot.

the reason is the checkers can only look at the on disk structures,
which will not necessarily be correct at all times since the system is
using it.
