If the linux server works well in the proof of concept, it will be a one
time, one way move. I had mostly hoped to avoid a dump to tape, mkfs,
restore from tape, since tape is really SLOOOOOW and requires a LOT of
human intervention for a couple of Tb.

Note that ia32 has a 2TB blockdevice limit in 2.4. And even 1TB in RHEL 3, wonky things start happening if it's larger.
2.6 can go larger, but only with a 64bit box. eg. alpha, itanium, amd64.

So if you are going to connect it to a linux server your best bet is something other then your average intel box.

You could split your raid in multiple raid luns to get around this.

If you are going to run on a SGI Altix I don't think you'll have a problem, but Steve knows best.
