We run postgresql on xfs (over LVM) on hardware raid (raid 50) with internal
logs, and have done so for years now. Great performance, no data loss. In
addition, xfs_freeze is very useful for doing backups:
1.) rsync from $PGDATA to a copy location
2.) xfs_freeze -u $PGDATA
3.) repeat the rsync
4.) xfs_freeze -u $PGDATA
Online backups without pain.
(we used to do it with snapshots, but LVM snapshots don't appear to be 100%
reliable, so we live with the freeze which is at most several seconds long)
I will note the server runs nothing but postgresql. Secondly, all changes --
kernel upgrades, version upgrades, etc. -- are first tested and allowed to
"soak in" on a test server, before they are applied to the production server.
All in all, your skepticism is well justified.

Murthy
