There are two limitations in play.
1) Some people might stick them on a DVD (*whistles*) and they would
most likely make it ISO9660/UDF (that's what I do). The filename
length (max) of UDF is 64 characters but there is a switch for
mkisofs that makes it accept longer and I believe the limit is
109 or something. But it's totally against the standard.
2) One part of the installer has a max filelength of 80 characters
but that limit can be increased to somewhere around 100 characters.
I haven't gotten adverse effects with it increased to that but
I haven't looked through all the places it might be used so I'd
be real careful about breaking that limit as well.
So basically I think that making things max 64 chars long is the
way to go. No problems with anaconda and no problems with the
most popular CD/DVD filesystems.
