I'm not sure what the problem is, but what you are doing is meant do be done with rmt. You can still use ssh, but instead of dd handling the tape the rmt utility will do it.

You get other benefits too, like the ability to catalog your backups with xfsinvutil, and xfsdump/xfsrestore can handle moving between different tape files (filemarks).
