The last Slack I used (8.1) wasn't clued-in enough to provide a SCSI+XFS
kernel, so I would install a mini-root type system with a compiler and kernel
source into the swap partition, recompile the kernel, reboot, and migrate back
onto the old FS (or create new ones).  If you have the RAM that should work
nicely.
