Well, I imagine it depends on how the controller breaks down I/O.
Hardware controllers probably manage to emulate regular hard drives
better, and don't have the same problem with caching that Linux software
RAID5 does.  So I'll bet that this option probably doesn't make much
difference for hardware RAID.  I can't benchmark that, though - the
computers I have with hardware RAID are currently busy doing other things.
