I fixed it. I did some more searching around the archives and found a
post by Cliff Wells explaining how to do it. Took me some time to
rebuild the system image but I did it. I had to force the old kernel to
install but it went in and all is fine.

For some reason I found that xfsprogs wasn't installed. Might be a bug
in the 9.0 install disk.
