Good stuff - I've got it happening locally now and have written a
little script to reproduce it (much like yours), I'll look into it
in more detail tomorrow.

BTW if you're interested, mkfs.xfs -dfile,name=/tmp/foo,size=100m
will do those dd+mkfs steps as one (creates foo as a sparse file
too if /tmp supports that, so its quite quick).
