On fs with unwritten=1 it doesn't cause lots of io, and finishes instantly. On fs unwritten=0 does lots of io, but doesn't render system unresponsive for couple hours. My understanding is that in the case when unwritten=0 there is no other way around, but to zero out extents (heavy io).
