BAckup your user data/etc

use mondo to backup the system image... http://www.mondoresue.org/

If it doesn't work out you can use the mondo to restore it...Just make sure you do mondoarchive -V, and your system can actually boot fromt he CD before you go wiping things out :)

Has anyone gone ahead and actually done an upgrade from RH7.x (in my case,
RH7.1) to RH9?

I'm currently running an XFS system, installed from the earlier XFS
enabled RH7.1 installer, and I've got the RH9 enabled installer.

I'm just looking for any gotchas, or whether it will turn out to be a
pretty smooth upgrade, based on others' experiences.
