The problem is in gcc, not in the kernel. Red Hat ships with a broken,
unofficial beta gcc. Please replace that gcc with gcc 3.2.2 (and while
you're at it, replace Red Hat with a competent distribution that provides
a working compiler). You'll find that your kernel compiles fine.
