Ok, all that should work, really.
You shold be able to:
        - transfer the DVDs
        - transfer the Harddisks
        - Install Linux on the SGI machine (http://www.debian.org)

First, you may Check it / Test is before you do the real work:
You find at: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/
an single iso-CD Linux, ready to run without installing anything, just 
burn it to CD.
It has the current XFS included and you may test your datatransfer
work without any risks.
