For the archives:
I have not compiled the kernel mentioned above but installed the
original RedHat errata kernel on a new root fs. Did the same tests and
the fs corruption is still there! Time for bugzilla.

Yes, and this kernel tree already has a lot of bug reports. More so then the previous kernels. The tg3 hangs of your system combined with some systems nog booting with an smp kernel makes for a flaky kernl.

My gut says changing something drastically might be a good way to solve it, if the subtle touches don't work ofcourse.
