I've observed this behaviour on a Dell Latitude C610. The directory /var/lock
was empty, really empty: It did not even contain . and ..! After xfs_repair from
the installer CD (linux rescue) it worked again, but /etc/fstab was empty. ls -l
showed approx. 250 chars for /etc/fstab, but cat did not show any line. I had to
recreate /etc/fstab.
