Thanks for the advice, Seth.  lilo is on the MBR of /dev/hda.  lilo
does seem to allow installation on the swap partition /dev/hda3 but
gives me an error message saying that /dev/hda3 would not be the right
place.

Followed all your suggestions but, alas, exactly the same result.
Here is some of the relevant output during the boot process which
results in having to press the reset button:

Have left out the details from CPU to Code.

Suggestions welcome.
