Hi Alan - 

There are a few caveats on using Irix disks, I think there is a list in the
faq, for starters.

If "mount" says that xfs is not supported, can you check to see whether
you got any system messages?

If you compiled in xfs, check that xfs is in /proc/filesystems
If xfs is a module, check that the module is loading correctly, and it
should also show up in /proc/filesystems.

That might be the place to start..
