I've used the 1.2pre1 installer a few times and just worked around the
flukes. On that same note, there's no way I'd use it to install a box
that I care about. This has nothing to do with the installer though.
RedHat is a major version change. More major than the last few major
version changes too. It breaks compatibility with more than just a few
things. For instance, many perl modules from CPAN won't compile on the
new threaded version of Perl 5.8. Apache 2 is used meaning that many
webserver configurations have to be re-worked. Gnome2 is used meaning
that much of the desktop does not work. Depending on your application
there are a lot of things that will work, but just be forewarned that
RedHat really went out on a limb to push the new technology.
Before there are any major flames going on here, I firmly commend RedHat
for this release, it was a major step to ensure that future releases
didn't have to be dumbed down. The only way any of these major version
differences were going to be overcome was to force the developers to
update their packages and RedHat has a lot of influence on things like
that (look at the number of RedHat 8 comments on here versus the number
of Suse 8.1, also a fine distribution). However much I like the fact
that this is happening, that doesn't help perl modules compile.
The real answer is to either stick to RedHat 7.3 (which I'll be doing
for quite a while) or be sure to thoroughly, thoroughly, thoroughly test
your RedHat 8 installation first.
In the end, the installer has some caveats, it does work, and I've used
it several times.

P.S. Despite missing a lot of functionality that 1.4 has, the RedHat
Gnome 2 installation is just absolutely beautiful to look at.
