Ugh - isn't that always the way? - 5pm on Friday and then you
run one more test...

For some reason I don't get yet, this block splitting change is
causing a livelock in dbench with the new benchmarking harness,
though all the QA tests are passing with it.  So, I've backed it
out for now, will have to investigate this some more next week.
