The other thing you might do is compile in kdb, and when it locks up see
if you can get into kdb. (You'd need to get to a text console, then hit
the "pause" key).
Once in kdb, "ps" will show you running processes, and then "btp <pid>"
will show you the backtrace for <pid>. "bta" will show you all
backtraces. You can look through those to see if anything seems to be
stuck waiting for a lock, etc. It's easier to capture the output if you
have another machine connected to kdb via serial, but you can just poke
around and take notes by hand if you don't have a serial console
On the off chance that this has something to do with your almost-full
filesystem, you could try unmounting it and seeing if the machine stays
up - I don't think this is likely to be the problem, though.
