Yep
My searches missed this :)

For the record (and search engines) it was the autofs init.d script that 
was failing silently and thought my file maps were program maps.
Hmm, seems that this is a fairly easy-to-exercise bug in the RH7.3 XFS 
kernel.
I'll see what Eric Sandeen did and see if it applies to the src shipped 
with the RH iso so it can be patched.
