GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

i have all my data back. dd conv=noerror, sync bs=4096 did the trick.
                                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^
again it took many hours but after that the actual recovery was a piece
of cake. xfs_ncheck didn't segfault this time so i got the full file
list which already made me happy.
xfs_repair then complained about inconsistend metadata so i erased the
log, mounted the filesystem and taadaa there was my data. about 99% was
there, the rest was in lost+found of which i could reconstruct about 90%
so i have like no data loss at all. i really love the sophisticated
repair tools of xfs. many thanks to the coders!

i will probably get myself another 80GB IDE and make some nice RAID1
just to be extra safe, because even xfs_repair won't help me much with a
nice head crash or sth. of that sort i guess :)

thomas

ps. if someone wants to know the 80GB that ran too hot was a Maxtor 80GB
5400rpm(!), got myself a 80GB IBM 7200rpm now but will probably exchange
it for one or two Seagate Barracudas which are supposed to be more
quiet, reliable and don't get so hot.
