We use XFS exlusively on about 15 production servers.
The biggest is called 'goliath', which is a fileserver >4 TeraByte.
We run XFS 1.1 in Kernel 2.4.18-xfs, CVS from 1,5 month ago.
XFS seems to us the most reliable an most usable filesystem in the Linux
world. My production test on goliath was Power-off without any shutdown,
more than 10 times. The system (XFS is root fs) came up in a glance.
Later a SapDB Server was added on extra hdd space. XFS succeeded our
hard-core crash/power down crash tests also very fine.
SapDB (see: http://www.sapdb.org, http://sapdb.automatix.de, GPLed
enterprise class RDBMS, compareable to Oracle, successor and anchestor of
Adabas D) runns very fin on XFS in Linux.
We were heavyly disapointed in reiserfs. Sure the theretical specs are
impressive, but there was missing realiabilit. We say only:
NFS+disapearing files until next boot.
We can not recommend ext2/ext3 due extensive filesystem checks. Ext3 is a
journaled fs for starter.
We hate IBM jfs due big instability. JFS is not usable for a stable,
reliable system. Needs manually repair filesystem after powerloss, jfs
looses data during this 'repair filesystem'. My opinion: forget jfs.
As JFS was designated by SuSE as IBM partner, it was included jfs in 7.3
distribution, so we took in in a IBM friendly customer's server. We
earned Only troubles. The support exchanged it against XFS on month
later, now this server runns 137 days up without any further troubles.
To Linus:
You may forward this eMail to Linus. PErhaps he recognizes the fine work
of the XFS staff.
To XFS staff:
GREAT WORK. KEEP ON.
