I suddenly realize that you will probably all be laughing at my idea of
"large", this is just a subdirectory with about 50,000 files, total size
2.8 GB (du -h -s .). Most of them are either .tar.gz or rpm files.
Whatever is wrong, piping to cpio instead of using cp -adpr fixes it. I
don't have time right now, but I will try to get an strace on it
tonight.
