I just tested it with a just checked out CVS version and this patch, but still
getting almost the same thing...

For example when extracting a kernel tar.bz2 it mostly hangs when creating
directories (at least it seems so) for about 5-10 seconds. Removing also hangs
sometimes for some seconds.
