I've done a quick search on the mailling list archive & FAQ and was
amazed to find no mention of this.

Has anybody tried making a patch for the "Software Suspend" project?

(you can also find this project on sourceforge.net

Apperantly there is a patch for the rieserfs and you can find it here.
http://fchabaud.free.fr/English/default.php3?COUNT=4&FILE0=Tricks&FILE1=Laptop&FILE2=Swsusp&FILE3=Options

It appears quite simple and I'm wondering if there's something i can do
to help since i'm using XFS on this laptop.

A Brief explanation of the "Software Suspend Project" (similar to
Windows Hibernation):

Name: swsusp
Version: v8
Kernelver: 2.5.1
Status: 8 (usable)
Author: Gabor Kuti <seasons@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Description: Software Suspend using pretty near only high level
routines
Date: 20-DEC-2001
Descfile-URL: http://falcon.sch.bme.hu/~seasons/linux/swsusp.desc
Download-URL: http://falcon.sch.bme.hu/~seasons/linux/swsusp-current.gz
Homepage-URL: http://falcon.sch.bme.hu/~seasons/linux/swsusp.html
Remark: _MUST_ be compiled by gcc-2.91.66, with 2.95.3 won't work

Enable the possibilty of suspendig machine. It doesn't need APM.
You may suspend your machine by either pressing Sysrq-d or with
'swsusp' or 'shutdown -z <time> (patch for sysvinit needed). It
creates an image which is saved in your active swaps. By the next
booting the kernel detects the saved image, restores the memory from
it and then it continues to run as before you've suspended.
If you don't want the previous state to continue use the 'noresume'
  kernel option.

For more information take a look at Documentation/swsusp.txt.
