OK, so I switched from 2.4.9-31 contrib to 2.4.9-31 1.1.
Reboot. (Clock gains an hour mysteriously[1]).
Add applets and launchers.
~12 shutdowns/logins later and it all seems fine.

On one occaision all the applets "forgot what they were", but this is
different from all launchers and applets disappearing completely. I
think the "panel" may have got itself very confused at this point.

So Simon was right, and Eric need worry no longer (and thank you both
for your help).

Needless to say, if it does it again (and it doesn't appear to be just a
gnome bug) I'll let you know.
