compiling it by yourself should be fine; read the FAQ on recommended
compilers.

Release 1.1, absolutely.

The 2.4.9-13 kernel is pretty old now, I wouldn't bother with any testing
on it at this point.

Not sure what to tell you on this one, I assume it said that the
filesystem was busy?
