One feature we require that only XFS provides (as far as I know) is the
ability to punch holes in files. We continually record video to a file
and when the file gets too large, we just chop off the front and keep
writing.

That's an interesting thought. The box can be reset (by the user
pulling the smart card) without losing power. So I guess in that case,
the IDE buffer would still get flushed.
