I have never used grub with password so I don't know about that. But
when you come to the menu, IIRC type e to go to edit mode. Then you have
to edit the boot line, just add 'single' at the end of the line. Then
use b to boot this configuration.
It's nothing specific to the SGI Installer, RedHat behaves the same.
