You don't say which kernel you are running - things should be better
in the current cvs tree. And please do not assume that all the over
head of deleting email in evolution is the filesystem underneath it!

I realize you do not have the mail anymore, but I think you will find
evolution did a lot of its own running around to delete that email.

Get a current cvs tree, and mount your filesystem with -o logbufs=4
this will help.
