How is a kernel compile a test of disk performance?  Kernel compiles are
generally CPU-bound, not I/O-bound.

Why don't you test it with a disk benchmarking tool?

As far as your kernel compiles, on a 4-CPU system, make -j4 will most likely
speed things up considerably.
