That's right, because my problems were simply due to a broken hardware RAID. 
:-)

The RAID has already been sent back to the manufacturer. We expect to receive 
a replacement drive in a few days.

The problem YOU are facing seems to be related to a bug in XFS relating to 
signed vs. unsigned chars. As I understand it has already been fixed, so just 
fetch yourself the current CVS source and you should be set.
