XFS won't build as a module on my machine after the change.
Adding "obj-m := $(O_TARGET)"
to the Makefile in fs/xfs/pagebuf fixes this for me.

However I still get the file 
/lib/modules/2.4.17-xfs/kernel/fs/xfs/pagebuf/pagebuf.o
after "make modules_install", which isn't used afterwards
(at least lsmod doesn't show).
