FWIW, I was running 2.0.4-1142 with kernels 2.4.10, 2.4.14 + xfs and
the preempt patch for a while without incident.  I used the above
patch against vmmon to and all the kernels worked for me.  I also
briefly ran 2.0.4 with a 2.4.17 kernel from CVS before I upgarded to
3.0.0-1455 yesterday and am now running that.

The interactive response and "feel" is much improved.
