There was a problem reported with dumping emacs on NFS; it had to do
with a bad interaction with mmap().  Are you sure you're not actually
building over NFS?

As one data point, I'm running a 2.4.16+xfs kernel, and I've been able
to build emacs21 on Debian sid just fine (on an XFS file system).
