When I was investigating the purchase of a new computer recently and checking for Linux compatibility, I discovered (by searching the web, especially the linux-kernel archive) that some chip sets have been known to cause random data corruption. This is one reason why it is a good idea to provide hardware details with bug reports, for example by including the output obtained by running lspci on the system as well as the details of the main board and raid controller. According to what I have read, some of the hardware problems can only be overcome by disabling DMA in the kernel configuration; but fixes for the relevant chip sets may already have been included in the kernel in any case, so these problems may not arise with recent kernels - I don't know. |
