Well, it appears I got my panic solved right after I sent my first email
I hadn't given it much thought, but the stock kernels on the Installer
CDs are Pentium based (Duh). Since it seemed processor dependant (ie
only when booted with smp), I recompiled the stock RH 2.4.9XFS kernel
using the provided athlon-smp file (which I didn't realize existed till
I poked around when I went to recompile the kernel manually). For most
of my boxen I build from Linus kernels, but with this box I'm trying to
stay as stock as possible and it didn't hit me right away that my kernel
wasn't athlon compiled. Doh!
I've rebooted at least 10 times without a single panic now so that seems
to have done the trick.
Sorry for wasting the bandwidth :)
Mike
