Was this in a pop-up window, or on a virtual console?

Can you switch to virtual console 2 (ctrl-alt-2) and see if
/mnt/sysimage/sbin/grub-install exists?

I don't think anything on the updates disk should cause this problem.

By the way, a slightly newer updates disk image is there now - but it
should not affect grub at all.
