I've been using 8.1 since it first was available. It detected all my 
hardware fine and setup went without a hitch. I've since upgraded my 
kernel to 2.2.12 w/ preempt patches and it seems a bit snappier than the 
default kernel Mdk ships with. Other than that, it was no more broken 
after install than Redhat etc... for me. YMMV, but it works for me :)

P.S. I've got fairly basic hardware: P2 400 384MB Ram, 2 IDE HD, Int 
DVD, Ext. USB CD-Writer, TNT vid card - All detected and working after 
install.
