This is a known problem that has existed in xfsrestore since day 1 on
IRIX but has never really been a problem until its Linux version because
most IRIX folk use xfs exclusively.

Anyway, it's on our list of things to investigate and solve.  Until then,
you could, as you say, patch the Amanda code, mount an xfs filesystem on
/tmp/amanda, or possibly write a simple wrapper script around xfsrestore
to change directory for you.  Or, if you're feeling adventurous, you could
take a look at the xfsrestore code and let us know what you find... :)
>From memory, there's a simple check to ensure that the cwd is xfs -- but
the question is whether the check is simply wrong or if there is a real
reason for it to be there.  (I suspect the check could probably be
removed, but I'm often wrong.)
