What "Linux vs. XFS" situation are you talking about?  It's more of
a "distro vs. XFS" situation.  Linus/Alan seem to be pretty
"gung-ho" on XFS for 2.5/3.0.

Besides, some of us have been running Ext3 for 20 months, and XFS
now for close to 8, on production networks.  I have a notebook
computer with a pre-mix of RedHat 7.1 + SGI XFS 1.0.1 + Updates +
Ximian Gnome that I use to install all my systems (home, work,
consulting) in <30 minutes.  I don't know how easier it could be!

I'd say the "outside factors" are just using some of the FUD you
mentioned to con you.  People can argue any position they want to. 
The "choice" we have in Linux is the same thing Windows bigots use
to say Linux is "fragmented."  Again, FUD.
