In my spare time (!) I'm working on characterizing how long it takes a
write to get out to disk on average, it seem to be on the order of 30
seconds, with normal mount options (this should be ~ the same as with
ext2, for example). This is what I would expect based on bdflush, etc,
but some people's experience suggests that it's taking longer, this is
really something I want to feel sure of.
But in any case, it occurred to me that you could make /etc on it's own
partition, and mount that O_SYNC - I don't think that would be too much
overhead, /etc doesn't get written that much on a normal system (?). If
Oracle puts config files elsewhere, you could simlink them onto this
filesystem.
