That mail was incorrect, kgcc compiles 2.4.7 quite happily.  There may
have been one bit of code that failed on kgcc but it was rewritten.

To answer the broader question, XFS will transition to gcc 3.0 at some
time.  But that will probably not occur before the main kernel is
verified on gcc 3.0 so until Linus says that 3.0 is safe, stick to
kgcc.  OTOH I have to use gcc 3.0 for IA64 2.4.7, that needs bleeding
edge compilers.
