Yes, a patch was published early July. I have not tried it myself
However I have seen no report about problems or success with it on
either the JFS list or the grub list.

And this is where grub has problems, it has to understand the XFS
directory structure and be able to walk it. I'm sure Steve and co will
agree that it's not simple. progress has been made but I'm not able to
put full-time effort on it and XFS requires grub to use technigues it
has not done so before. 

I have not heard from Erich who was also trying.

BTW, does anyone use a root partition and a separate boot one.
