The 2GB limit doesn't exist in ext2 either -- it was there due to
limitations in glibc and some other bits.  Most recent distros include
large file support.

To take advantage of this, an applications needs to compiled with the
proper flags.  And for that, of course, you'll need to talk to VMware.
